Papers and photographs, 1858-1986.

The collection consists of copied papers and photographs of Charles O. Farciot. The papers include biographical materials, historical articles concerning the Schieffelin prospecting trip and Farciot's Alaska Photographs, and genealogical materials concerning the Farciot family. The photographs consist of copies of Farciot's original Alaska and Arizona albums (two of each) containing 166 different images, along with copy negatives and contact prints of all of the different Alaska photographs and a selection of those taken in Arizona.

Charles O. Farciot was born in Corgemont, Switzerland in 1840. He became a United States citizen in 1858. Farciot was an inventor, steamship engineer, and photographer. Farciot operated photography studios in Arizona where he met the successful miner Ed Schieffelin. He came to Alaska in 1882 with a gold prospecting party from Arizona led by Schieffelin. Edward Lawrence Schieffelin was born on October 8, 1847 in Tioga County, Pennsylvania. In 1849 his father Clinton Schieffelin and uncle-in-law Joe Walker headed west to try their luck in the gold fields of California. Eventually, the two purchased property along the Rogue River in Oregon, and in 1856 a young Edward and his family moved west to join his father in Jackson County, Oregon.
